KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 260,700 places are being offered by public and private universities and colleges this year.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin hoped students would take advantage of the opportunities available to them.
He was confident that his ministry would achieve its target of providing higher education to 40 per cent of youths, aged between 17 and 23.
"This is based on last year's figures when 35 per cent of this age group managed to enter institutions of higher learning," he said at the launch of the ministry's annual Higher Education Carnival yesterday.
The 260,700 places are available in 20 public universities, 41 private universities and colleges, 21 polytechnics, 37 community colleges and 485 private colleges. A total of 40,500 of these places are for Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) holders and matriculation students, and 43,200 places for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) holders.
Khaled said his ministry would conduct its online enrolment in stages. In the first stage, post-SPM and STPM students are allowed to pre-register by giving their personal details.
In the second stage, students will fill in their top eight choices for the institutions and courses of study. After the examination results are released, students are allowed to change their options.
